An innovative FDA-approved magnetic field technology is now available at Nevada Mental Health, one of the state’s largest psychiatric services providers.
Nevada Mental Health has partnered with BrainsWay, a leader in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) technology. The company’s Deep TMS device has proven itself as a viable treatment option for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and smoking cessation.
“TMS offers a unique solution for treatment-resistant depression, with some patients starting to see results after only a few sessions; It’s a game changer for mental health,” said Dr. Timothy Jeider, a psychiatrist and co-founder of Nevada Mental Health.
The neuromodulation treatment involves gently placing an electromagnetic coil against the scalp. Magnetic pulses from the coils then stimulate nerve cells in specific brain regions whose activity levels are diminished by major depression, OCD or the biomechanisms that fuel smoking urges. Completely noninvasive, there is no surgery or implanting of electrodes involved, and the stimulation level can be adjusted to the person’s needs.
The 20-minute treatment sessions are administered daily for six weeks. People can drive to and from the sessions with no impact on their physical abilities afterward. Benefits are often seen at three or four weeks and patients feel considerably better by six weeks.
“We’ve seen big progress with medications over the years, but we’re finding some people are just not getting better with behavioral therapy and medicine combined,” added Dr. Sid Khurana, psychiatrist and co-founder of Nevada Mental Health. “With noninvasive neuromodulation, we’re able to give our patients another option.”
