Search continues for man who capsized in canoe in Delaware River

Authorities searched for a second day Saturday for a man whose canoe capsized in the Delaware River, but without success.

A 39-year-old man went into the water around 3 p.m. Friday near the Route 80 bridge in Warren County, according to the National Park Service.

The focus of the search has been south of the bridge. Weather permitting, rescue crews will be out scouring the river again on Sunday morning, NPS spokeswoman Kathleen Sandt said.

The area is part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

A second person in the canoe, a woman, was rescued from the river and taken to an area hospital after the boat overturned.

Her condition was not available Saturday.

National Park Service Rangers and dive team members, volunteers from the Portland Hook and Ladder Co. and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission conducted the search Saturday.

Officials said neither the man or the woman in the canoe were wearing life vests.

The NPS, in a release, said it recommends only experienced people attempt to kayak or canoe on the Delaware River this time of year due to high water levels and water temperatures only in the 60s.

Park Service officials say they recommend everyone wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when on or near the water.
