Ice pops in at least 15 states recalled for possible Listeria contamination

WASHINGTON (Circa) - Ice pops in at least 15 states were recalled for possible Listeria contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Budget $aver Cherry Pineapple Monster Pops and Sugar Free Twin Pops produced by Ziegenfelder Company of Wheeling in West Virginia voluntarily issued the recall for approximately 3,000 cases. The company's Denver plant underwent a routine inspection which uncovered Listeria monocytogenes in "environmental samples" collected by the inspector.

These pops were sold to retailers in "Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming."

According to the FDA, the Ziegenfelder Company has halted the production of the product at the plant while the investigation continues.

The agency urges consumers that purchase the affected pops to return them.

"The Cherry Pineapple Monster Pops carry the UPC code 0-74534-84200-9, and have lot codes D09418A through D10018B. The Sugar Free Pops carry the UPC code 0-74534-75642-9, and have lot codes D09318A through D10018B," the FDA said in a statement.

Listeria can cause infections with side effects such as fever, nausea and abdominal pain.
