Florida's redshirt senior LB enters transfer portal for second time

The college football transfer portal reopened on Monday to much fanfare as the sport's de facto free agency system begins churning once again. It should come as no surprise that the Florida Gators were somehow involved, but rather than inviting a new player into the fold, they saw one depart.

Redshirt senior linebacker Mannie Nunnery, who entered the portal on Jan. 11 but withdrew his name less than 10 days later, has once again decided to seek greener pastures. Despite getting starter-level reps this spring, his elevated participation was due to the injuries that have slowed three of Florida's top players at the position and it appears that the writing is on the wall for the Houston, Texas, product.

The split was described as a "mutual parting of ways" by sources to 247Sports' Matt Zenitz.

Nunnery had multiple roles on defense in 2023, including reps in the slot at the STAR position as well as a hybrid outside linebacker that attacked the quarterback. Head coach Billy Napier also noted that they played him at the big SAM and WILL linebacker.

Florida kicks off its 2024 regular-season schedule on Aug. 31 against the Miami Hurricanes inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Gators open their SEC schedule with the Texas A&M Aggies arriving in the Swamp on Sept. 14.
